APU Alumnae Selected by U.S. Department of State for Prestigious Fellowship
Azusa Pacific University alumnae Nancy M. Harcar ’13 was selected for a 10-month fellowship project teaching English in the West Bank Palestinian Territories. Harcar grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and is one of 165 U.S. citizens selected for the 2016-17 English Language Fellow Program. After a lengthy application process and multiple interviews, she was offered the project in Nablus, West Bank Palestinian Territories.
State Education Department Submits Comments on Federal Every Student Succeeds Act Proposed Rulemaking
The New York State Education Department today submitted comments on the U.S. Department of Education’s (USDE) Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on Academic Assessments under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The Department’s comments focus on the need to provide states with greater flexibility in the testing of certain English language learners and students with disabilities.

Additionally, ESSA requires states to have standardized statewide entrance and exit procedures for ELs.

AIR Study Finds Californias Transitional Kindergarten Gives English Learner Students Advantage for Kindergarten
Washington, D.C. – English learner (EL) students who attend California’s transitional kindergarten program enter kindergarten with stronger English language, mathematics and literacy skills than English learners who did not attend transitional kindergarten, according to a new study released today by the American Institutes for Research (AIR). The study is based on AIR’s multi-year study of transitional kindergarten in California, a state where one-third of kindergartners are classified as English learners.
Maine DOE issues reminder to complete survey on the identification and exit criteria for English learners
Under the Every Student Succeeds Act, states are required to establish a uniform method of identifying and reclassifying English learners. Although Maine currently has these uniform procedures, it has been more than a decade since Maine has made any amendments to its Home Language Survey, and it was in 2013 that Maine underwent its latest data study to review English learners’ performance on academic assessments and their correlating WIDA ACCESS for ELLs scores.
